Editors Note: Friday, 17th October, we celebrated the Final Assembly with our Matrics of 2025. This event was a true testament to their connection as a class, as well as to the Waldorf Education they received. The Class 13 Guardian, Mr. Anwar Moosa, delivered a beautiful, heartwarming speech and was kind enough to allow its publication. So, without further ado…

“Do you see that bird flying there?”

Good morning everyone,

Six years ago, a group of bright-eyed fledglings fluttered into my care. Some chirped loudly, some perched quietly in the corner, and some… well, squawked their opinions before they even unpacked their bags.

We didn’t know then what the years ahead would bring – including that strange migration pattern known as COVID-19, which had us all nesting at home for far too long. But through every gust of wind and every storm, this class, my flock, found a way to soar.

We started off as a large flock – the sky was crowded – and as the years went by, some birds found new branches to perch on. Yet those who stayed? You grew wings of strength, courage, and character.

And so, as I stand here at the final assembly, watching you prepare to take flight, I’d like to say a few words about each of the incredible birds I’ve had the honour of guiding.

Amber – You’re the fiery phoenix of the class; strong, opinionated, and impossible to ignore. When you sing, it’s like the dawn chorus itself. You’ve risen, again and again, with passion and sass.

Sydney – The wise owl. You’ve been the class’s mother hen; guiding, comforting, and occasionally scolding with love. Your wisdom and music have been the heartbeat of our roost.

Dylan – Once our mischievous magpie, collecting trouble wherever he could find it and now, a noble eagle. Loyal, dependable, and with a heart that soars.
Luke (Pookie) – What bird do you give the ornithologist? Quiet as a dove, but when you speak, even the parrots fall silent.

Nicholas – Our falcon of facts. You see the world in black and white, cutting through the fog like it’s a hunting ground of knowledge. We’ve all learned something new from your random fly-bys of wisdom.

Jet – The robin with a voice for justice. You perch proudly on the side of what’s right, and you’re never afraid to chirp up when someone needs a defender.

Bryce – The heron; calm, observant, and graceful. You see things differently, standing still while the rest of us flap about. And yes, I admit it, my favourite bird in the flock.

Amy – A hummingbird in human form. Small, bright, and impossible to ignore. You’ve brought energy and laughter to every branch, and your HR skills have kept this aviary in line.

Maia – The cockatoo; bold, sassy, and never shy to voice your opinions. Artistic and daring, you squawk first and think later, but you always come through with flair.

Matthew – The parrot who’s learned to say “Sorry, Mr Moosa” more times than any other phrase. A rebel, yes, but with a heart that beats with respect and care.

Marian – The weaverbird, always working away, crafting something beautiful through effort and determination. Quiet strength personified.

Erin – A swallow, graceful and nurturing. You’ve guided others with warmth and strength, always flying in formation with care for your flock.

Jessie – The hawk; sharp-eyed, strong, resilient, never afraid to dive in. You face every storm head-on and come out soaring higher.

Loren – The lovebird. Gentle-hearted, emotional, and always caring deeply. You’ve shown that vulnerability and strength can share the same wings.

Sam – The canary of kindness; cheerful, loving, and full of passion. You bring light into any room and make every nest feel like home.

Adam – The puffin; quirky, loyal, and wonderfully consistent. You’ve marched to your own rhythm, often with an animal companion by your side.

Misha – The nightingale; quiet most of the time, but those who know you hear the music in your presence. You’ve got a voice that matters deeply to those around you.

Rosie (Buggie) – The finch; delicate but full of detail and care. You notice the little things that make life beautiful, and your empathy has made this flock a warmer one.

Before this flock takes off, I must acknowledge the winds beneath our wings, the parents. You’ve been nothing short of incredible. Through every storm, every late-night study session, every project panic and teenage turbulence, you’ve been there; steady, supportive, and patient.

Thank you for trusting us – me and my fellow guardian teachers – with your most precious fledglings. For standing by us through the early-morning messages, the reports, the emails, and the occasional “my child did what?!” moment.

We teachers may guide them through the skies, but you built their wings. And for that, we are deeply grateful.

So, my dear flock, it’s time. Time to spread your wings and fly beyond these familiar skies.

Remember, no matter how far you soar, or which winds carry you, you’ll always have a place in this old nest.

Thank you for letting me be your guardian bird for the past six years. Watching you all learn to fly has been the greatest privilege of my teaching journey. I never said it often enough but, I LOVE YOU.

Now, off you go! The sky is waiting.

Anwaar Moosa, Class 13 Guardian
