Tomorrow is the Autumn Equinox, one of the two times in the year where there is a balance between the outbreath and the inbreath of the year, as we move from summer to winter and again to summer. The journey of the light through the cycle of the year unites us to the world of the elements as we experience the changes in relationship to the fire, air, water and earth elements but we are not only the body and experience, we also have a soul and spirit journey to follow throughout the year. Now, is a moment of balance as we poise before we make our journey into winter, the inner journey of finding the light within our souls. But before we turn towards winter, we are now leaving summer behind us with the abundance of its fruitfulness. Food for thought. What crops have we yielded? What do we have in abundance of in our lives? What were the seeds that were planted to produce this harvest?

How did we tend to and water these seeds, this life?

The teachers and the children are preparing for the festival as it approaches at the end of the term. The festivals are a time of celebration of the Light, our relationship to the light, that is the light of the sun which makes the world visible to our senses and the light that is the inner light that is the flame of life within us. Crafts are being prepared, stories are being told, water colour paintings created, now as we experience this time of harvest. We are reaping what we have sown, sharing of the harvest and finding that which can be taken forward for the new season, the new cycle so that the seeds of thoughts and feelings can be taken forward for the new investment to bring forth once more the new shoots, roots, leaves, flowers and fruits in Spring time. Much will now fall away, be given away and released so that the core of life of love can be nurtured in winter before it finds a renewed expression. Hence the imagination of the rising of the glorious sun at the break of the new day. Can you picture to yourself the cool clean clear air with the piercing sound of the birdsong, the rays of light stretching forth over the horizon and the world turning from dark into colour before your very eyes? In order to meet the new day, we have to first put down the old ways of yesterday, let go the worries and troubles of the day so that we may meet the joy of the rising sun, the new day as it dawns in our consciousness.

As we gather together, teachers and children, next week Friday to celebrate our festival, we honour our creativity as human beings, the genius within each that is born out of the mystery of the universe, the harmony that exists in the seen and unseen worlds. This moment of community celebration attracts to itself more of itself and therefore as we celebrate the light we become more of that light and that shines out into our larger community to bring joy to many. Therefore, I say, a festival at the Waldorf School with the children is a most beautiful, humbling and uplifting event to be cherished. May the light of the new day rise up in your soul.
