This year’s Class 12 Play Festival showcases three very different modern classics. This key group project for the final year of Waldorf education calls on the students to draw on what they’ve learned in many fields over the years, as they strive to support each other and shine themselves. The class have been crafting their performances and polishing the production aspects needed to bring their work to the stage. Come next week and be impressed and entertained by their hard work!

Murder on the Nile by Agatha Christie (PG10)

Kay, a wealthy heiress, is on a honeymoon trip with her new husband Simon. But his jealous ex-girlfriend Jacqueline seems to be following the happy couple. Plenty of other mysterious characters are passengers joining them on this elite-class trip through mid-20th-century Egypt, in this classic whodunnit: the arrogant Miss Ffoliot-ffoulkes and her niece; the anonymous Mr Smith, Kay’s guardian the parson and her French maid, and Bessner the German doctor. Suitable for ages 10 and up, as there is of course murder afoot.

Our Country’s Good by Timberlake Wertenbaker (13+)

Australia 1788: with American independence fresh in memory, and France about to revolt, the British governor of a new colony of convicts and soldiers decides to allow Lieutenant Ralph Clark to direct a comedy play using “loose women” and crooks as actors and actresses, in the face of opposition from many military men. In her award-winning play, an ‘A’ level set text and based on a true story, Wertenbaker draws her tough characters and their situation with both humour and unflinching honesty (particularly for the women of the colony), moving between tragedy and comedy. This complex and brilliant play includes mature language and themes and is for an audience aged 13+.

The Play That Goes Wrong (PG) by Lewis, Sayer and Shields

Cornley Polytechnic Society doesn’t have a great record of successful productions but are still optimistic that this year’s whodunnit will be different. But thankfully for us it’s not. A neverending sequence of hilarious errors under Chris’s direction, as his actors and even his stage manager and lighting technician find themselves keeping the action going in the face of their own incompetence and occasional unconsciousness! Wonderfully fun family entertainment, though we’re making this play a “PG” as there may be one or two unexpectedly loud bangs along the way…!
