READATHON 2008
ADOPT A BOOK

Norman Cousins said “A Library is not a shrine for the ownership of books. It is not a temple where literary incense must be burned or where one’s devotion to the bound book is expressed in a ritual. A library is the delivery room for the birth of ideas, a place where history comes to life”.

So come in and borrow a book, read in order to laugh, to dream, to learn, to enjoy the familiar and explore the unknown… Libraries in schools give the tools of reading and writing to be able to achieve these aims.
We will be launching the Readathon on the 11th August, and your children from Class 3 to Class 7 will be coming home with their Readathon forms. Please make every effort to help us with this important fundraising event, as books are very expensive and we would like to provide new, stimulating and informative titles for the children. For those who are not sure of procedure - your children will ask family members, friends and your work colleagues to sponsor them for pages that they will read during a half hour period on Readathon fancy-dress day.
The teacher will confirm the pages read and the child will collect the money or they can get straight donations. Please do not allow your children to collect door-to door, as this could pose a security risk to them, businesses can also sponsor. Class 1 and 2 will collect small change (notes also happily accepted!) as their contribution towards the Readathon and they should bring the money to school to fill their class’ money box.

This year the emphasis will be different from last year as the children from Class 3 to Class 7 will Adopt-a-book. They will choose a book they wish to read that needs some TLC and they will draw a new cover, write a review and re-cover the book. This will help considerably to improve the book stock that we do have, as it is a valuable commodity.

Readathon and fancy-dress day will take place on Friday 29th August, where the children will dress up as characters from the stories and history that they have been learning about this year in their classes. Their teachers will help them with what they will do collectively. Parents are welcome to come and see the children in all their finery. Class 7’s will then read to the Class 1’s and Class 2’s will come into the Library for Story time. Later in the day they will sit quietly and read for half an hour in their class for their sponsored time. The children will then have 3 weeks to bring their money in, before the end of the term on Friday 19th September.

If every individual makes an effort we will all make this Readathon an unqualified success and allow our Library to be a catalyst for the birth of ideas. If you are planning for a year, plant rice, if you are planning for a decade, plant trees, but if you are planning for a lifetime – educate people!
Many thanks, Mary Nicolson

IMBIZO

This Saturday Mr. Sideeq Railhoun will be work-shopping, with the parents, aspects around the question of diversity. His model is predicated on the premise that there is no law or policy that can eliminate discrimination; that the path to removing domination and prejudice lies through the human heart, and asks who you are, not what you are. Please make an effort to attend. Remember child care will be provided.
Venue: Drama Hall Time: 2–4 pm
